The Department of English was established the same year as the institution, in 1985, although in its early years, it only offered Compulsory English to the Arts and Commerce streams.
Incorporating Elective English as a subject taught in 2006 was a significant achievement for the Department in its early stages.
In 2008, the department&rsquo;s long-held hopes were fulfilled with the introduction of the Honours course in English language and literature, which officially began in the 2008-2009 academic session.

The UG Department of English at Naba Ballygunge Mahavidyalaya, affiliated with the University of Calcutta and certified under 12(f) and 12(b), envisions cultivating a comprehensive understanding of English literature and language among its students. It aims to shape individuals who are not only well-versed in literary traditions but are also capable of contributing meaningfully to society through their knowledge and skills.

<li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Students are motivated to participate in paper presentation at the Departmental Seminar.</li>
<li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Students are also encouraged to participate in conferences held at other institutions. For example, students from the 3rd semester English honours participated at the One Day Seminar organized by the Heritage College on 20.09.2019.</li>
<li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Various events such as drawing competition, poster making are organized to encourage student's participation.</li>
<li>&nbsp; &nbsp;While discussing a drama in the classroom, students are encouraged to enact the characters in the text.</li>
<li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Use of Multimedia, PPT, etc. as Teaching-Learning Aid.</li>
<li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Screening of movies relevant to the syllabus.</li>
<li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Conducting quiz through Google Form.</li>
<li>&nbsp; &nbsp;Parent-Teacher meetings are conducted intermittently with the aim of building a strong partnership between guardians, students and educators.</li>
